What is Biofilms ?

Biofilms are the most common state of life for microorganisms. Biofilms are everywhere and present a unique hurdle in infection prevention.

In the hospital setting, biofilms are associated with sinks, waste traps and drains. These biofilms harbor and disperse multi-drug resistant organisms leading to hospital acquired infections. Biofilms protect bacteria from disinfection and have been proven to be >1500 times less susceptible to disinfectants in some cases.

Research has demonstrated that hospital sinks can spread contaminated droplets up to 1 meter. Pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and CPE (carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae) have been associated with hospital sinks, thriving within biofilms.
